Social Security Benefits

When a loved one has died, please call Social Security at (800) 772-1213.

After connection, dial “0”, this will connect you directly to payable benefits. This service is available on weekdays, from 7am to 7pm. It is important to inquire within the same month of death because benefits may not be retroactive. You may also call the local Social Security office at (888) 886-7213. Office hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., weekdays. The office is located at 5907 W. Kings Avenue, Glendale, AZ 85306 (map).

Social Security Benefits

Full benefits at age 65 or older or reduced benefits as early as age 60. A disabled widow or widower can receive benefits at age 50 – 60. The surviving spouse’s benefits may be reduced if he or she also receives a pension from a job where social security tax was not withheld. At any age, if she or he takes care of a child less than 16 years or is disabled.

Under the age of 18 (or up to 19, if they are still attending secondary school full time).

A one-time payment of $255 is made to a surviving spouse or child who meets the requirements stated above. Other benefits are related to individual earnings and subsequently paid to survivors.
