Don was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, OK, as a draftsman/illustrator shortly after graduation in 1951. Don met and married his wife, Cheryl (Hopper) while working for Phillips, in January 1956. He was drafted into the Army one month after being married.
While in the Army he was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA where he was assigned to the Food Service School as an illustrator until his tour of duty was over. He left his trademark there by painting many of the signs on the base.

He enjoyed many hobbies and activities for many years such as flying his Cherokee 180 plane, golfing, fishing, bowling, roller skating, attending church and wood working (he made many furniture items for his family thru out the years) but his greatest love was spending time with his family.
