Retired Senior Master Sergeant, Leon Vorters, passed away peacefully in his home on June 5, 2019 with his loving wife, Rose, by his side.
He was born on October 21st, 1934 in Philadelphia, PA, the 12th of 13 children, to Mr. and Mrs. James Reynold. While in college in Philadelphia, Leon happened to see a young girl behind the counter at a McCrory’s Five and Dime. Though she rebuffed his attention at first, they eventually fell in love and married on September 1, 1956 in Philadelphia. They were married for 63 happy years.
An active part of the U.S. Airforce for 27 years, Senior Master Sergeant Vorters had a Bachelors of Science Degree and a Masters Degree in Education. He and Rose raised four children: Wanda, Dian, Leon Jr. (Mylea), and Michael in California and are the proud grandparents of Reese and Matthew.
After a time, Leon and Rose moved to Michigan to retire. Never one to let grass grow under his feet, Leon became a prominent salesman for Metropolitan Life Insurance and taught the youth choir at their church.
In 1997 while on their way to California to see their children, they traveled through Sun City, Arizona, liked what they saw, and bought land. Because she was still teaching, Rose returned to Michigan, but Leon, who had a plan in mind, remained in Sun City. When Rose retired in 2001 she joined Leon in Sun City permanently. It was then he surprised her with a newly built home for their retirement.
Leon enjoyed golfing, gardening and seeing new and different architecture whenever he traveled. He was the epitome of a family man and loved spending time at home with Rose. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him and by all the lives he touched with his quiet, protective ways.
Senior Master Sergeant Leon Vorters’ Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 17, 2019 at Sts. Joachim & Anne Catholic Church at 10:00am in Sun City.
Internment will follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
