Leona Barbara Albers passed away peacefully in her home on July 13, 2019 just four weeks after losing her loving husband of 61 years, Eugene Albers.
Leona was born on December 4th, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, the oldest of 2 children, to Mr. Michael Lunecki and Mrs. Anna Levicki.
She attended DePaul University before she met Eugene at a local dance. Leona and Gene were married in 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1971 they moved their family of 4 children from Dolton, Illinois to Phoenix, Arizona with Gene’s work with the Greyhound Corporation. Leona loved the warm desert weather and was grateful to trade in shoveling snow and bundling up toddlers for swinging her tennis racket and backyard swim lessons. She had a great sense of humor.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Michael Lunecki, Anna Levicki and stepfather John Tamasunas, and her younger brother Jerome (Jerry) Lunecki. She is survived by her 4 children - David, John (Karen), Janet (Richard), and Kathleen (Riyadh). Leona also leaves behind 9 grandkids and 1 great grandchild.
Leona was a loving mother, a devoted wife, and a woman of sound faith. She enjoyed camping with her family in many of the United States National Parks and beach camping in Southern California and Mexico. After her husband Gene retired at 55 years old, they put thousands of miles on their Airstream trailer traveling to Show Low, AZ, Alaska, Canada and the Yucatan Peninsula of southern Mexico. Anyone who met Leona knew her to be a lifelong learner, a devout volunteer, a savvy armchair real estate agent and stock investor, and one of the finest domestic engineers.
Leona will be laid to rest with her husband Eugene at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. In lieu of flowers, Leona wanted donations to be made to one of her frequent volunteer organizations, the St. Vincent DePaul Charities or to Everest Hospice.
