Obituary

Marvel Jean Opp (86) passed away on January 25, 2020, following a brief illness at Hospice of the Valley, Surprise, Arizona.  Her family was at her side as she went to be with our Lord.  Jean was born August 19, 1933 in Belfield, North Dakota to Mathew Markles and Stella Victoria (née Gill) Smith.  She was the eleventh of twelve children in a large and loving family.

Jean was raised in Belfield and in October 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Gilbert M. Opp, a U.S. Air Force serviceman.  During Gilbert’s military career, they made many towns and cities their home, until finally settling in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Jean worked as an accountant for various businesses and was always praised for her stellar work.  In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling, fishing, golf, skiing, boating, camping, and traveling with her family.  Her hobbies included sewing, needlework, and crochet, and she was always up for a hand of bridge or a game of dominoes.  Jean’s primary role was serving as a loving wife and mother, and most important to her was to spend time making wonderful memories with her family and friends.  After retiring in 1999, she and Gilbert moved to Surprise, Arizona.  In retirement they spent many happy miles in their motor home, traveling these United States that she so loved, and visiting her many family members and friends along the way.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Melvin, Marvin, Lawrence, Eldon, Donald and sisters Florence Rosenberg, Gladys Kutil, Bernice Rosenberg, and daughter in law Gaylene Opp (née Jarrett). She is survived by her husband Gilbert, her daughter Glenda (Kenneth) Frazee, her sons Gilbert Jr. (Jane), and Daniel, her grandchildren Kendra (Jim) Lasnik, Jack (Indy) Frazee, Sarah (Joshua) Carter, David Opp, Amber(Dennis) Reinagel, Brandon (Stephanie) Opp, Jarrod Opp, Sean Opp, Demi-Raine (Derek) Boring, and her great-grandchildren Jillian Lasnik, Jackson Frazee, Charles Carter, Jonathan Carter, Dalton Reinagel, Noah Reinagel, Kingston Reinagel.  Jean is also survived by her brother Lloyd (Pearl) Smith, sisters Ellen (Ray) Sheeler and Doris (Phillip) Wagner, and many nieces and nephews.
