May-Hart C. Hertel

(aka Cookie Hertel)

Sept. 1, 1940 – March 21, 2021

It is with great sadness that her family announces the death of May/Cookie Hertel. After 21 years of living with Parkinson’s disease, she died comfortably at home surrounded by love. She was not afraid to die and her family and friends can be comforted by the promises of the Christian faith, which was so central to May’s life.

May was a person who taught many lessons through the way she lived even more than through the words she spoke. She looked for the good in EVERYONE. She was an excellent listener, but when she spoke, she spoke with compassion and wisdom. She explored things she loved in music, art, study and learning. She loved conversations, discussions, learning and connecting with people.

May was active throughout her life in churches, working with youth, small groups and preaching. After being an at-home mom for many years, she went to work as the Special Assistant to the Associate Dean at College of DuPage in Illinois.  Then, she returned to school and obtained her Masters of Divinity degree. She was ordained in the Presbyterian Church at age 60, and she enjoyed a career as a Chaplain for Pike’s Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs, CO. She retired after 11 years as her health deteriorated. In recent years, she loved taking art classes and participating in Tremble Clefs, a choir for Parkinson’s patients.

May is survived by her husband of 59 years, Joe Hertel; her daughter, Sue (Mitch); son Joe (Judy); son Andy (Tanya) and grandchildren Caitlyn, Declan, Delaney, Eleanor & Marianne. She is also survived by her sisters Ansie (Neil) and Peggy and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family is so grateful for the care and support provided Care for the Heart and by Hospice of the Valley in Surprise, AZ in the final weeks of her life. A celebration of her life will be held on Zoom in the coming weeks. Please contact the family for further details.

Dearest May
I know you are rejoicing in Heaven and singing your heart out! Probably sounds better than when you, Lois and I sang Sugartime!
Thank you for being the dearest friend of all! Love, Betsy

I knew May Hart as an 18-year-old, when we were neighbors in Teaneck, NJ.

I chose the Purple Radiance flowers to honor May's presence in the royal courts of Christ the King.

Care from the Heart

We at Care from the Heart had the pleasure of working with May for over 11 years. She was such a kind and sweet person. May would attend our holiday party every year and we all looked forward to being able to visit with her. We know how much she loved her time spent with the Tremble Clefs so we have made a donation in her honor. Joe and family, we are so sorry for your loss. We hope you can find comfort in the wonderful memories you made and shared with May. She will be greatly missed. Sending love from all of the staff at Care from the Heart.

May was the first person to teach a class at Cc of Grace.,and through out the years at life recovery....I was so impressed with her Spirit , love and wisdom...
May....,  represented how Jesus would want all of His Children to  treat ,act  radiate and respond to each other....with love ,compassion, understanding, and empathy being the feelings May would have each of us to feel when we would be in her presence...I am so blessed to have known  May ....I truly loved her.......

Cookie had just been told that she did NOT have Parkinson’s, a diagnosis that sadly be revised. But in celebration of what we all thought was good news, Jack made a gourmet picnic for the two couples and off we went to eat in one of the
Most beautiful spots in Colorado. What a happy day. She had a worry-free day. I remember the chipmunk that kept sneaking up and licking the cold soup bowls. I have many, many stories that make me smile when I think of her but I think the smile is biggest with this one.
