Nancy Lee Gawel (nee Springer) passed away peacefully April 24, 2020. She was born September 5, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Pershing High School. Nancy enjoyed downhill skiing and met Stanley Gawel at the Skiwi Club. They married October 21, 1961 and raised 5 successful children in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Nancy’s hobbies included sewing, needlework, porcelain painting and baking. She was always up for a hand of Michigan Rummy, Euchre or a game of Chinese Checkers. Nancy’s primary role was serving as a loving wife and mother. Most important to her was to spend time making wonderful memories with her family and friends. She loved puzzles and was an avid reader. She enjoyed reading to her grandchildren and was considered a mother to all those who knew her. She was especially fond of welcoming people into her home for homemade desserts and treats.
Nancy had many careers in her life but was very proud of her time as administrative assistant to the chief of surgery at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. She retired to Sun City West, Arizona in 2000.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lydia and Paul Springer, and her sister Paula Boase. She is survived by her husband Stanley Gawel, their 5 children: Germaine (Jerry) Ward, Julie (Davis) Glass, Laura (Dan) Strickland, John (Amy) Gawel, Amy (Craig McCullough) Gawel, six grandchildren Trevor Strickland, Britany Strickland, Jason Gawel, Brendan Ward, Cameron Ward, Chelsea Strickland, one great grandson Julian Strickland, her sister Grace (Jack) Cole, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nancy loved to stay active by walking, bingo, reading, scary movies, volunteering, and puzzles. She enjoyed traveling to visit her children and grandchildren – never missing a graduation or other important event. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic parish.
There is some disagreement as to who her favorite child is but she would tell you all her children were her favorite. Her kind smile, timely words of wisdom, and sense of humor will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to Capuchin Soup Kitchen (https://www.cskdetroit.org/ways_to_give/donations). Please join Nancy’s family in sharing memories, pictures or videos on her tribute wall at www.caminodelsol.com.
Due to current social restrictions no funeral will be held at this time. A celebration of life will be planned and held at a later date.
