Shirley Mae Freund returned to her heavenly home on Monday, January 27th, 2020 at the age of 82, after a long battle with cancer. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.
Shirley was born in Woodstock, IL, to parents Robert and Margaret (Schaefer) Thurlwell on June 1, 1937. She was raised in McHenry, IL, the oldest of six brothers and sisters. She married Melvin J. Freund on October 1, 1960. Together in faith, they had five children. They are proud grandparents to nine beautiful grandchildren. They spent their winters in Sun City West, Arizona. She was an active gardener, golfer and pickleballer, she enjoyed/battled with technology, and most importantly she enjoyed family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Melvin. Her sons Kurtis (Kathie), Russell, Jason (Cheryl), and daughter, Ginger (Bradley) McCann. Nine grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica, Brianna, Sarah, Mason, Morgan, Caiden, Kate, and Kaely. Her sisters, Peggy (late John) Lawrence, Irene (Jack) Miller, Rita (Jim) Thennes. Brothers, Dan Thurlwell and Don (Laura) Thurlwell. Her many nieces and nephews.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Margaret (Schaefer) Thurlwell and her infant son, Melvin Joseph Jr., who died at birth.
Shirley will be cremated in Arizona and a Catholic Mass and burial will take place at a later date in Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, since Shirley loved gardening, the family asks that you plant a flower in your garden in her memory. Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Shirley’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
