Steven S. Holm, a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and dedicated friend died on Tuesday,
February 19, 2019 at the age of 78. Steve was born October 11, 1940 in Holdrege, Nebraska to Grace
Orlene and Ivan Holm. While he and his family lived in several locations in Nebraska, his teen years were
spent in Sidney, where he met Patricia (Morris) whom he married April 23, 1960.
Steve proudly served a 4 year term in the U.S. Navy and upon completion of his service he and Pat moved
back to Nebraska to start a family and enroll in Chadron State College. He completed his degree with a
triple major in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
Steve accepted a position with the U.S. Dept. of Defense as a cartographer at the Defense Mapping Agency
in St. Louis, Missouri. His passion for space led him to complete his Masters degree in Astronomy at the
University of Virginia. Over a career spanning 36 years, some of Steve's many achievements included
writing software for early defense satellites orbiting Earth, working for the CIA in Washington, D.C., and at
Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs.
Steve retired in 1993, when he and Pat moved to the sunny warmth of Sun City West, Arizona, where they
made many wonderful friends. Steve and Pat enjoyed cruise traveling, sightseeing, and trips home to visit
their daughters in the St. Louis region. He loved nature and animals so passionately that many of his
vacation photos contained more scenery and animals than people...a funny fact that he, Pat and his
daughters often laughed about. His great fondness for polar bears led him to advocate and donate for their
protection and their environment.
Steve is survived by his wife Pat (of 58 years), daughters Sheila Holm and her wife Dee, Tracy Trapp and
her husband Kevin, grandchildren Jessie and Will Trapp, sisters-in-law Susan Morris and Penny Jenkins,
brothers-in-law Michael Morris and Rene Segovia, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Steve's memorial service will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona on Thursday, February
28th at 9:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund Memorial or a charity of your
choice in Steve's name.
