Have the Talk of a Lifetime
Talk about how you want to be remembered. It can make a difference of a lifetime.
Have the Talk of a Lifetime, a program created by The Funeral and Memorial Information Council, was designed to help families have meaningful conversations about the things that matter most in their lives. These discussions can give important insights to the people they care about — insights that can be used to one day honor and remember their lives.
Why is having the talk of a lifetime important?
Although we might have daily conversations with our loved ones, the most meaningful and profound ones don’t always occur. Having this kind of conversation can make a difference of a lifetime, helping us see our loved ones in a new light and getting to know them on a deeper level. By sitting down to discuss their life stories, we can gain a clearer understanding of what they value, the life lessons they’ve learned, and ultimately, bring us closer together.
How do we start the talk?
We don’t need to wait for a special moment to start having these kinds of talks. They can take place anytime and anywhere — at home, during a meal, when we’re out for a walk, or playing games as a family. Sometimes starting with visual prompts, like a photo or an entire photo album, a memento, or a souvenir will open up a dialogue about past experiences. Visiting special places such as a church where your loved one was married or a favorite restaurant can also help someone open up and share their story.
Who should have the talk?
We can have the talk of a lifetime with anyone we hold dear—our grandparents, parents, spouse, siblings, uncles, aunts, and cousins, or friends. These meaningful conversations can take place at any time and don’t need to be reserved for when our loved ones are nearing the end of life. We should embrace the present, making the most of our time with them and appreciating the moments we have together.
