Now that we’ve explored some of the benefits of interring cremated remains in a cemetery, I believe it is important to discuss two alternative choices: scattering and home placement. Each option carries unique aspects that should be carefully weighed to ensure a dignified tribute.
Scattering
We’ve all watched movies where cremated remains are scattered in a body of water, on top of a mountain, or in a forest. Scattering most certainly has the potential to be a touching experience that provides an element of closure. However, we must realize that both land and waterscapes change over time. Lakes and rivers can dry up, mountain ranges can be altered by logging, and forests may be devastated to wildfires. Places that were once serene and calm, might one day be replaced by busy shopping centers, expansive parking lots, or even landfills.
Scattering also introduces an element of unpredictability that detracts from its solemnity. A sudden gust of wind could blow the remains away from the intended spot, toward the person doing the scattering, or those gathered to observe, adding an emotional layer to an already poignant occasion. An additional drawback of scattering is that it leaves no permanent record of the deceased for future family records or genealogy.
Home Placement
The desire to bring a loved one’s urn home is perfectly natural. While displaying it on a bookshelf or mantle can be comforting, unforeseen circumstances may arise when the person who kept the urn passes away.
We often hear stories of decorative urns being accidentally sold at garage sales, with buyers later discovering the nature of their purchase.
